Rare Northern Lights Illuminate Skies Over Cumbria
Residents across Cumbria were treated to a breathtaking natural display as the Northern Lights illuminated the night sky in a rare and vivid spectacle. The phenomenon, also known as the aurora borealis, transformed the skyline with glowing shades of green, pink, and purple, delighting onlookers across the region.
The event was caused by heightened solar activity, with charged particles from the Sun interacting with gases in Earth’s atmosphere. These interactions produce the vibrant colours associated with the aurora, creating a shimmering effect that is usually only visible in far northern locations.
Although the Northern Lights are most commonly seen in places such as Scandinavia and northern Canada, stronger geomagnetic activity has recently made sightings possible further south. This allowed many people in Cumbria to witness the display without the need to travel.
Clear weather conditions made the spectacle even more striking, with some observers able to see the lights with the naked eye. Experts say that if solar activity continues at this level, similar displays could occur again, encouraging skywatchers to stay alert for future sightings.
