Rail disruption near Sellafield after urgent track safety inspection
Rail services near Sellafield were disrupted after an urgent safety inspection of the track led to the line being temporarily blocked. The incident caused delays and changes to services, impacting passengers travelling along the Cumbrian Coast route.
According to rail officials, the issue was identified early in the day, prompting immediate checks to ensure the safety of the line. During the inspection, trains were unable to run normally through the affected section, leading to delays and some service alterations.
The disruption affected routes between Barrow in Furness and Corkickle, with some trains delayed by up to 40 minutes as engineers worked to resolve the issue.
After the safety checks were completed, the line was reopened, but rail operators warned that disruption could continue while services returned to normal. Passengers were advised to check before travelling and expect possible delays throughout the morning.
Rail authorities emphasised that safety inspections are a critical part of maintaining the network, even if they cause short term inconvenience. The incident highlights how quickly services can be affected when potential safety concerns arise on busy rail routes.
