Public Invited To Help Shape West Cumbria's £12 Billion Pioneer Park Vision
People across West Cumbria are being invited to take part in a public consultation that will help shape the future of the proposed £12 billion Pioneer Park development. The consultation event will take place on Tuesday, July 14, at The Peddler in Whitehaven.
The ambitious project is planned for land at Moorside, next to Sellafield, and is being led by BEC in partnership with the Nuclear Decommissioning Authority, Sellafield Ltd, Cumberland Council, local Members of Parliament, and the Department for Energy Security and Net Zero. The vision is to create a world leading centre for clean energy, advanced manufacturing, and innovative technology industries.
Visitors to the consultation event will be able to explore the proposed masterplan, learn about the industries the development hopes to attract, and share their priorities for future jobs, skills, transport infrastructure, and wider community benefits. Project leaders say local feedback will play a vital role in ensuring the development reflects the needs and aspirations of the people who live and work in the area.
Josh MacAlister, MP for Whitehaven and Workington, described Pioneer Park as a once in a generation opportunity to strengthen West Cumbria's economy and position the region at the forefront of Britain's clean energy future. He encouraged local residents and organisations to participate in the consultation and help shape a project that could deliver significant long term investment and employment opportunities.
The development is expected to support a wide range of industries, including clean energy generation, small modular nuclear reactors, artificial intelligence, and other technology based businesses. Supporters believe the project could diversify the local economy, reduce long term reliance on nuclear decommissioning work, and create thousands of skilled jobs over the coming decades.
The consultation marks an important milestone as planning work continues on one of the largest proposed economic developments in the region. Organisers say community involvement will be essential in shaping a project that delivers lasting economic growth while supporting local communities and strengthening West Cumbria's role in the United Kingdom's clean energy transition.
