Proposal to Convert Old Bakery Into Shared Home Set for Approval
Planning officers have recommended that councillors approve an application to change the use of a former bakery building into a large house in multiple occupation for nine people. The bakery closed some time ago and has stood empty since, prompting developers to put forward plans to bring the site back into regular use.
Under the proposals the ground and upper floors of the old bakery would be renovated to provide shared living spaces and bedroom accommodation alongside communal areas for residents. The recommendation for approval follows an assessment by planning officers who say the change of use is acceptable in principle and would help make better use of a long vacant property.
Local people will have the opportunity to speak at the planning meeting before councillors make the final decision. Supporters of the plan have argued that the development will help meet demand for more affordable rental housing in the area.
Opponents have raised concerns about increased traffic and pressure on local services, but council officers believe conditions can be put in place to manage those issues if the application gets formal approval.
