Police Urge Carlisle And Barrow Fans To Enjoy Cumbrian Derby Responsibly

18 Aug 2026 Police Urge Carlisle And Barrow Fans To Enjoy Cumbrian Derby Responsibly

Police have urged Carlisle United and Barrow AFC supporters to enjoy the highly anticipated Cumbrian derby responsibly, with fans warned that unlawful behaviour will result in police action.

The two Cumbrian clubs were preparing to meet at Brunton Park for a rearranged League Two fixture, with both sides expecting strong support for the local derby.

Cumbria Police said a significant policing operation would be in place around the stadium and across Carlisle city centre because of the expected large crowd. Officers were expected to focus on maintaining safety while allowing supporters to enjoy the occasion.

Police acknowledged the passion surrounding the fixture but urged supporters to remain respectful, responsible and mindful of other people throughout the evening.

Chief Superintendent Lisa Hogan said officers were looking forward to what was expected to be an important evening for football fans across Cumbria. She stressed that police would be present to protect the public and would intervene where individuals became involved in unlawful behaviour.

The derby was expected to attract supporters from both sides of the county, adding to the atmosphere around Brunton Park and the surrounding areas. Local fixtures between Carlisle and Barrow have traditionally generated considerable interest because of the close geographical links between the two clubs.

Carlisle United also backed the police message, with the club recognising that the actions of a small number of supporters could have serious consequences for the wider community.

Club officials encouraged supporters to get behind the team while ensuring that behaviour inside and outside the stadium remained appropriate.

Barrow AFC similarly called on its travelling supporters to show their usual passion while making sure their conduct did not cross the line. The club said it was looking forward to seeing its supporters travel to Carlisle for what was expected to be a memorable Cumbrian football occasion.

The warnings came as both clubs competed near the top of League Two, adding further significance to the derby. The combination of local rivalry, a large expected attendance and the importance of the fixture meant authorities were keen to prevent tensions from developing into disorder.

Police presence around the stadium and city centre was intended to provide reassurance to supporters, residents and businesses while helping the match pass without serious incidents.

For the majority of supporters, the message was straightforward: enjoy the football, support the team and respect fellow fans and the wider community.

The authorities and both clubs hoped the fixture would showcase the strong football rivalry between the two Cumbrian sides without incidents overshadowing the match itself.
