Police Launch Search for Missing 85-Year-Old Woman After Care Home Disappearance
An urgent police appeal was issued after an 85-year-old woman disappeared from a care home near Kirkby Stephen, sparking a major search operation across the local area.
Gladys Moore, a resident at Stobars Hall care home, was reported missing after she was last seen leaving the facility at approximately 9.05am on Thursday morning. According to police, she was believed to have been heading towards Kirkby Stephen when she vanished.
Authorities described Gladys as around 5ft 3in tall with short grey hair and glasses. At the time of her disappearance, she was believed to be wearing a red jacket, black jogging bottoms and grey trainers, while carrying a dark wooden walking stick.
Cumbria Police appealed directly to the public for assistance, urging anyone who may have seen the elderly woman or had information about her whereabouts to contact officers immediately. The appeal quickly spread across social media as local residents shared photographs and details in the hope of helping search teams locate her safely.
The incident prompted concern throughout the community, particularly due to Gladys’ age and the potential risks posed by spending extended time outdoors alone. Missing person investigations involving elderly individuals are often treated with high urgency because of the increased vulnerability associated with age, mobility issues and possible medical conditions.
Police officers and volunteers searched surrounding roads, pathways and nearby residential areas while monitoring reports from members of the public. Local residents were also encouraged to check gardens, sheds and outbuildings in case the missing woman had sought shelter.
Later the same day, police confirmed that Gladys Moore had been found safe. Authorities thanked members of the public for their support and assistance during the search operation.
The case highlights the growing challenges faced by care providers and emergency services when elderly residents go missing, particularly in rural communities where search areas can quickly become extensive.
Further details about the circumstances surrounding the incident have not yet been released.
