Plans For Two Major Whitehaven Water Network Projects Revealed.
Two major water infrastructure projects are planned for Whitehaven, with United Utilities preparing improvements to both the town's wastewater and water supply networks.
The company has announced plans to upgrade a 900-metre section of wastewater pipeline running from West Strand Pumping Station to Whitehaven Wastewater Treatment Works. The work is designed to reduce the risk of pipe bursts and disruption to the public.
The project is expected to take around three months and is currently scheduled to begin in autumn, subject to the necessary approvals. United Utilities has also confirmed that the wastewater project is not connected to the discoloured water recently seen in Whitehaven Harbour, separating the planned infrastructure work from that issue.
A second major scheme will involve the replacement or upgrading of around 1.5 kilometres of water mains across Whitehaven town centre. This work is currently planned for the new year, with United Utilities saying residents and other affected people will be contacted directly before the work begins.
The projects form part of efforts to improve the reliability and resilience of Whitehaven's water network and reduce the likelihood of future disruption. Residents will have an opportunity to find out more about the plans and speak to representatives from United Utilities at a public drop-in event.
The event will take place on Monday, September 7, from 2pm to 7pm at The Beacon Portal on West Strand. The meeting will allow members of the community to learn more about the planned work, ask questions and understand how the projects could affect the area.
The wastewater pipeline project is expected to be carried out over several months, while the separate town-centre water mains scheme will take place at a later stage. Infrastructure improvements of this scale can require temporary disruption, but United Utilities says the work is intended to help provide a more reliable network and reduce the risk of future problems.
The projects represent a significant programme of investment in Whitehaven's existing water infrastructure.
