Pigeon Racing Season Begins with Fast-Paced Opening Weekend

15 Apr 2026 Pigeon Racing Season Begins with Fast-Paced Opening Weekend

The 2026 pigeon racing season has kicked off with an exciting and fast-paced opening weekend, as fanciers across Cumbria saw strong performances under favourable weather conditions.

Birds were released in the morning and benefited from a steady south-east wind, resulting in high velocities, with some pigeons reaching speeds of around 60 miles per hour. The quick race set an energetic tone for the season ahead.

Several lofts made an immediate impact. In Workington Social Limit club, one partnership dominated by taking the top three positions, showcasing excellent early form. Their winning bird came from a proven bloodline with a strong history of success.

Other clubs also reported competitive racing. In Harrington Central, a fancier secured multiple top finishes, including first place with a two-year-old hen competing in her first race. Meanwhile, another winning loft in Seaton RBL celebrated success with a carefully bred pigeon originally intended for international competition.

Across the region, multiple federations and clubs recorded strong entries and competitive results, highlighting the continued popularity and high standards of the sport.

However, the new season has not begun without challenges. Authorities in Guernsey have halted pigeon race releases due to aviation safety concerns. New regulations now prevent mass releases of pigeons within a defined distance of airports, leading to the cancellation of numerous planned events.

Officials say the move aligns with updated aviation safety practices, though local representatives have expressed surprise, noting that no previous incidents had been reported.

Despite these concerns, the opening races in Cumbria have provided an encouraging start to the season, with strong participation and impressive performances suggesting an exciting year ahead for pigeon racing enthusiasts.
