Person Airlifted To Hospital After Serious Car Crash In West Cumbrian Woods
Emergency services were called to a serious road traffic collision in Shoemire Wood, near Waberthwaite, after a person became trapped inside a vehicle following a crash. Firefighters from Bootle, Whitehaven, and Millom Fire Stations responded to the incident at around 3.25pm on Friday, July 10, alongside an air ambulance and other emergency responders.
When the first fire crew arrived, they received a handover from a first responder already treating the injured occupant. Firefighters immediately began assessing the casualty and securing the scene while preparing for a complex rescue operation. Shortly afterwards, the air ambulance landed nearby, allowing the onboard medical team to examine the patient's condition.
Following the assessment, the air ambulance doctor requested that firefighters remove the side of the vehicle to provide better access for treatment and a safe extraction. Using specialist cutting equipment, crews carefully cut away part of the car before successfully freeing the casualty from the wreckage.
Once the rescue operation was complete, the injured person was transferred to the waiting air ambulance, where the medical crew took over treatment before transporting the casualty to hospital for further care. Officials have not released details regarding the person's condition or the circumstances surrounding the collision.
During the rescue operation, emergency resources were stretched as additional incidents occurred across the region. The Millom fire crew was diverted to reports of a building fire, while firefighters from Whitehaven were sent to another road traffic collision, highlighting the demanding workload faced by emergency services that afternoon.
The incident demonstrates the vital role played by coordinated emergency response teams during serious road traffic collisions. The combined efforts of firefighters, first responders, and air ambulance personnel ensured the trapped casualty received rapid medical attention and was safely removed from the damaged vehicle.
