Pensioner Bus Pass Restriction to Be Removed Next Month

Pensioner Bus Pass Restriction to Be Removed Next Month

Older and disabled bus pass holders will soon be able to use their concessionary passes without the current time restriction, after a long-running change to local transport rules. The restriction that limits free travel before 9.30am is set to end from March 1, giving pensioners greater flexibility for early appointments, shopping and social trips.
The change follows successful trials in other areas where unrestricted bus travel for pass holders was introduced, and comes amid wider efforts to make public transport more accessible and convenient. Local leaders have said that removing the restriction will benefit people who rely on buses for everyday travel.
Under the England-wide concessionary travel scheme, older residents who have reached the state pension age and disabled people are entitled to free off-peak local bus travel, usually after 9.30am on weekdays and all day at weekends and bank holidays. Councils and transport authorities administer the scheme locally.
Transport campaigners and community groups have welcomed the decision, saying it will particularly help pensioners who have early medical appointments, need to attend classes or simply want to travel at times that were previously restricted. Many older people have said the rule change will make a noticeable difference to their independence.
Passengers are encouraged to check the exact date and details with their local council or bus operator and to plan journeys accordingly once the change comes into effect at the start of March.
