Pensioner Admits Hate Crime After Telling Woman to ‘Get Cancer’ and Threatening to Drown Her

An elderly man appeared in court this week after admitting a hate crime linked to abusive and threatening comments directed at a woman. The pensioner pleaded guilty at South Cumbria Magistrates’ Court in Barrow to sending a threatening message over a public network in which he told the woman she should “die and get cancer” and threatened to drown her in a bath, local court records show.
Prosecutors treated the offence as a hate crime, reflecting aggravating factors in the verbal abuse, though details of the woman’s identity and the circumstances leading to the confrontation have not been fully published.
The case was brought under laws that cover malicious communications and hate-related conduct, which can include messaging or comments intended to cause distress or alarm when motivated by bias.
Sentencing for the pensioner is expected later, where the court will consider both the content of the messages and the defendant’s age and background before imposing penalties.
