Pedalling Past Limits: Veteran Cyclist Raises £1,400 for Local Charities

Veteran cyclist Gerard McCarten, 86, has raised £1,400 for two local charities through an extraordinary cycling challenge. He aimed to cycle the equivalent height of Olympus Mons, the tallest mountain in the solar system, completing over 3,900 climbs near his home despite storms and even a fall along the way.
McCarten, a lifelong cycling enthusiast, said the challenge was as much about having fun and engaging the community as it was about raising money. “It keeps me active, and it’s a joy to know that my efforts can help people who need support,” he said.
Generous supporters helped him donate £700 to Hospice at Home West Cumbria and £700 to West Cumbria Society for the Blind, both vital local organisations that provide essential care and support to hundreds in the area.
Community members, including local schoolchildren, cheered him on throughout the challenge some even showing up in a homemade space suit, embracing his playful spirit. Friends and neighbours also joined for short stretches of the climbs, turning the event into a mini community festival.
Holly Harkness, Community Fundraising Co‑ordinator at Hospice at Home West Cumbria, praised McCarten’s determination, noting how important local fundraisers like him are in keeping vital services running.
With his fundraiser complete, McCarten’s achievement is a powerful reminder that age is no barrier to making a real difference. His perseverance and humor have inspired the community, proving that passion, dedication, and a little creativity can go a long way.
