Peaceful Protests Held in Carlisle City Centre

17 May 2026 Peaceful Protests Held in Carlisle City Centre

Two peaceful protests were held in Carlisle city centre on Saturday, drawing groups with contrasting viewpoints to the heart of the city.

The demonstrations were linked to a national “Unite the Kingdom” march in London organised by Tommy Robinson, also known as Stephen Yaxley-Lennon.

In Carlisle, Cumbria Action organised a march into the city centre shortly after 1pm, where participants delivered speeches outlining their position.

Meanwhile, Carlisle Against Racism held a counter-rally, assembling from around 11am to present opposing views ahead of and during the demonstrations.

The counter-protest group highlighted concerns around narratives being promoted at the national event, arguing that issues such as violence against women and girls are often misrepresented in public debate. They called for greater focus on social support services and unity across communities.

Police maintained a visible presence throughout the day as both groups gathered in designated areas of the city centre. The protests remained peaceful, with no major incidents reported.

Authorities managed the situation as part of a planned public order operation, ensuring both groups could demonstrate safely while minimising disruption to the public.
