26 Apr 2026 ParalympicsGB hero opens new Aldi on Preston Street Whitehaven

A brand-new Aldi store on Preston Street Whitehaven has officially opened its doors with a ParalympicsGB hero invited to mark the special occasion.

The store opening was led by Paralympics shot put athlete Anna Nicholson, who officially cut the ribbon and welcomed the first customers into the new supermarket. The event attracted local residents and marked a major retail addition for the town.

As part of the celebration, Anna Nicholson handed out fresh fruit and vegetables to early shoppers and also took part in a community engagement initiative linked to Aldi’s “Get Set to Eat Fresh” programme, which promotes healthy eating and education for children.

The new Aldi Whitehaven store is operated by store manager Harvey Browning and employs around 38 staff members, providing new job opportunities for the local community.

Following the opening ceremony, the Paralympian also visited a local school, where she delivered an inspirational talk encouraging children to stay active, try different sports, and maintain healthy eating habits.

Store management said they were pleased to welcome customers into the new branch and highlighted the importance of building strong community connections through local partnerships and events.

Overall, the opening of the new Aldi in Whitehaven represents both a retail expansion and a community-focused initiative, combining shopping convenience with health and education outreach.
