Pair To Face Court After Attempted Theft Of Carlisle Supermarket Cashpoint
Two men have been charged after an attempted cashpoint theft at a Carlisle supermarket, with both due to appear in court.
The incident occurred at the Morrisons supermarket on Kingstown Road in Carlisle during the morning of Tuesday, September 15. Police launched an investigation after an attempt was made to steal an ATM machine from the premises. The investigation subsequently resulted in two men being charged in connection with the incident.
Dean Smith, aged 33 and of no fixed address, is facing several charges arising from the incident. He has been charged with burglary, damage to property, dangerous driving and driving while his alcohol level was above the legal limit.
Tjay O’Neil, aged 35 and also of no fixed address, has been charged with burglary and damage to property. The charges relate to the same investigation into the attempted theft at the supermarket on Kingstown Road.
The charges against the two men cover different alleged offences, with Smith facing four charges and O’Neil facing two. The burglary and property damage allegations relate directly to the reported incident at the supermarket, while Smith is also accused of driving offences.
The attempted theft involved an ATM machine at the Carlisle supermarket, prompting police to investigate the circumstances surrounding the incident. Details released following the investigation identify the location as the Morrisons store on Kingstown Road.

Smith’s charges include an allegation of dangerous driving, meaning the case also involves an alleged road traffic offence alongside the burglary and property damage allegations. He is additionally charged with driving when his alcohol level was above the permitted legal limit.
O’Neil’s charges are limited to burglary and damage to property, according to the details released following the police investigation. Both men are connected to the same attempted theft investigation and were due to attend court together.
The case was listed before North Cumbria Magistrates’ Court on Wednesday, September 16. This was the day after the alleged attempted theft at the Kingstown Road supermarket, with both defendants due to appear before magistrates.
At this stage, the allegations remain matters for the court to consider. Being charged does not mean either defendant has been found guilty, and any further determination of the allegations will be made through the judicial process.
