North Cumbrian Road Set for 10-Day Closure for Maintenance Work

28 May 2026 North Cumbrian Road Set for 10-Day Closure for Maintenance Work

A north Cumbrian Road will shut for 10 days next week as contractors begin a programme of maintenance and improvement works in the area.

Cumberland Council confirmed that the C1012 route between Heathersgill and Boltonfellend, near Carlisle, will be closed from Monday, June 1, while crews carry out the planned work. The closure will affect the section stretching from Rigghead Cottage in Heathersgill to Boltonfellend.

According to the council, working hours will run daily between 8am and 4pm, with the project expected to continue for 10 working days, depending on weather conditions and on-site requirements.

A signed diversion route will be put in place throughout the closure period to help redirect traffic safely around the affected area. Drivers have been advised to allow extra travel time and plan journeys in advance while the work is underway.

Despite the road closure, authorities said access for emergency service vehicles will be maintained at all times. Pedestrians and dismounted cyclists will also still be able to pass through the area safely during the works. Waste collection services and school transport operations are expected to continue as normal.

The maintenance project forms part of ongoing efforts to improve road conditions and infrastructure across the region, with councils continuing to address wear and damage caused by heavy traffic and severe weather conditions.

Residents living nearby are expected to experience some disruption during the work, although officials say every effort will be made to minimise inconvenience where possible.

Motorists travelling through north Cumbria over the coming weeks are being encouraged to monitor local traffic updates and follow official diversion signs during the closure period.
