No 20mph Limits Planned Outside Barrow Schools Despite Public Backlash

06 Jul 2026 No 20mph Limits Planned Outside Barrow Schools Despite Public Backlash

Plans to introduce 20mph speed limits outside schools in Barrow have been rejected despite calls from members of the public. The decision has sparked debate over road safety and the protection of children. Council leaders insist existing measures remain suitable for the affected roads.

The issue attracted significant public attention after residents urged highways officials to reduce vehicle speeds near schools. Campaigners argued that lower speed limits would improve safety for pupils, parents and pedestrians during busy drop off and pick up periods. However, the authority concluded that there was insufficient justification to introduce blanket 20mph restrictions. Existing traffic management arrangements will therefore remain in place.

Officials said each location is assessed individually using national guidance, which considers factors including collision history, traffic speeds and the surrounding road environment. They maintained that current speed limits and safety features continue to meet the required standards. The authority also stressed that any future changes would be based on evidence rather than public pressure alone.

The decision has disappointed some residents, who believe reduced speed limits would provide greater reassurance for families and encourage more children to walk or cycle to school. Others argued that driver behaviour, rather than the posted speed limit, remains the biggest challenge. The debate reflects wider national discussions about how best to improve safety around schools and residential streets.

Road safety campaigners have continued to encourage motorists to exercise extra caution near schools regardless of the legal speed limit. They say careful driving, awareness of pedestrians and strict compliance with traffic laws are essential to preventing collisions.

While no immediate changes are planned, the council has indicated that road safety will continue to be monitored and reviewed where necessary. Future proposals could still be considered if new evidence emerges or traffic conditions change. For now, Barrow's school speed limits will remain unchanged despite the public backlash.
