Next Phase Begins for Carlisle Citadels Regeneration Project
The next phase of work on the major Carlisle Citadels regeneration project is set to get underway, bringing renewed momentum to one of the city’s largest redevelopment schemes.
The project, led by the University of Cumbria in partnership with local authorities, aims to transform the historic Citadels site into a modern city-centre campus. It forms part of a wider investment strategy designed to boost economic growth, increase footfall, and enhance Carlisle’s appeal as a university city.
Upcoming work will include preparatory activity on-site, such as demolition and groundwork, as the scheme moves closer to full construction. These early works are expected to pave the way for the main build phase later this year.
The wider Citadels development is valued at tens of millions of pounds and will create new teaching facilities, student spaces, and areas for business engagement. It is also intended to better connect the university with the city centre and support local businesses.
Project leaders say the development will play a key role in revitalising Carlisle, attracting more students, and strengthening the local economy. Once completed, the scheme is expected to significantly reshape the city’s urban landscape and improve opportunities for both residents and students.
