New four storey flats approved for Barrow town centre eyesore site

02 May 2026 New four storey flats approved for Barrow town centre eyesore site

A new four storey residential block has been given the green light for a prominent site in Barrow town centre, marking a major step in plans to regenerate a piece of land that has remained vacant for more than two decades.

The approved scheme will create eight flats on the corner of Abbey Road and Dalkeith Street. Planning documents showed the site has been empty since 2005 and has long been regarded locally as an eyesore. Councillors were told previous proposals had been brought forward over the years, but none had moved ahead to construction.

During the planning meeting, members of the local area committee welcomed the development and said the scheme could make a positive contribution to the appearance of the town centre. The building will include a central glass staircase giving access to homes on either side, with dedicated storage space also included in the plans. No objections were raised during the application process.

Councillors also heard that affordable housing requirements were not triggered because the development contains fewer than ten units. Even so, the proposal was seen as an important addition to housing provision in a central location where demand for quality accommodation remains strong.

The decision reflects wider efforts to strengthen and renew Barrow’s town centre. For many local residents, the approval represents more than a housing scheme. It signals progress for a neglected site that has stood empty for years and could now become part of a more attractive and active town centre.
