New Details Emerge In Investigation Into Death Of Mississippi Teen Nolan Wells
New investigative documents have revealed that witnesses told authorities 18 year old Nolan Wells had been drinking heavily with friends before he disappeared during a Fourth of July trip to Horn Island, Mississippi, where his body was later discovered.
According to preliminary information obtained by investigators, Wells travelled to Horn Island with a group of friends on 4 July. Witnesses told law enforcement that alcohol had been consumed throughout the day and that Wells chose to remain on the island with an unidentified woman when the rest of the group departed after their boat reportedly began taking on water.
Search teams began looking for Wells after he was reported missing on the evening of 4 July. His body was found by a National Park Service ranger two days later, on 6 July, in an area known for strong rip currents. Authorities have not yet determined his official cause of death, although investigators initially said drowning was suspected.
The Jackson County Sheriff's Office said there was no immediate indication of foul play when the investigation began, but stressed that detectives continue to examine all available evidence. Officials have welcomed an independent investigation commissioned by Wells' family and said the inquiry remains active while awaiting forensic results.
A private autopsy arranged by Wells' family concluded that both the cause and manner of death remain "undetermined pending investigation." The family's legal representatives have questioned whether all relevant evidence was available during the examination and have called for a full and transparent investigation before any conclusions are reached.
Investigators also reviewed GPS data from the boat used during the trip, which showed the group arriving at Horn Island during the morning before departing later that afternoon. Friends told investigators they believed Wells intended to remain on the island and denied abandoning him.
Authorities emphasised that the newly released witness statements form only part of the investigation and should not be interpreted as determining the circumstances of Wells' death. Officials said the state autopsy report and toxicology findings remain outstanding and are expected to provide important evidence in establishing exactly what happened.
The investigation remains ongoing, and authorities have appealed for anyone with additional information, photographs, or video footage from Horn Island on 4 July to contact investigators.
