New Bishop of Penrith Consecrated in Special Service at York Minster

01 May 2026 New Bishop of Penrith Consecrated in Special Service at York Minster

The new Suffragan Bishop of Penrith, the Rt Rev Michael Leyden, has been officially consecrated in a ceremony held at York Minster, marking a significant moment for the Diocese of Carlisle.

The two-hour service was led by the Archbishop of York, Stephen Cottrell, and attended by hundreds of worshippers, including clergy, family members, and representatives from Cumbria. Bishop Leyden was one of three bishops consecrated during the service, which also included the Bishops of Durham and Warrington.

Following the ceremony, Bishop Leyden emerged onto the steps of the Minster where he was warmly welcomed by those present. He spoke of his gratitude and sense of responsibility, describing the day as emotional and expressing thanks for the support he has received from friends, family, and colleagues throughout his journey to episcopal ministry.

Originally from Merseyside and with a background in theology and academic leadership, Bishop Leyden brings extensive experience in church education and pastoral work. He previously served in a range of parishes and theological institutions and has worked closely with both urban and rural communities.

He is expected to take up his role in Cumbria in the coming months, with a formal welcome service planned later this year at Carlisle Cathedral, where he will officially begin his ministry as Bishop of Penrith.
