Multiple Vehicle Crash Sends Cars Into Care Home Garden In Wigton
Emergency services were called to Wigton on Tuesday morning after a multiple vehicle collision caused two cars to crash through a fence and into the garden of Loveday Care Home, narrowly missing residents who had been sitting outside just minutes earlier.
Cumbria Police said officers were called to the incident at 10.48am, following reports of a collision involving multiple vehicles and one pedestrian in a car park near Loveday Care Home. Initial investigations indicate that a chain reaction collision caused several vehicles to shunt into one another, forcing two cars through bushes and a boundary fence before coming to rest in the care home's garden.
Around seven vehicles are believed to have been involved or damaged during the incident. Police said there were no reports of serious injuries, although officers, paramedics, and other emergency services remained at the scene while the situation was assessed.
Residents at the care home described the frightening moment the crash unfolded. Resident Gaynor Davies said several people had been enjoying coffee in the garden only 10 to 15 minutes before the collision occurred.
She said staff heard "an almighty bang" before discovering two vehicles had been pushed across the lawn, stopping only a short distance from the lounge and dining room. The incident also destroyed garden features, including a fountain, bird feeders, and planters.
As a precaution, residents were moved away from the affected area while emergency services secured the scene. Davies praised the home's staff, particularly deputy manager Katie, for acting quickly to ensure everyone remained calm and safe during the incident.
Police said it remains unclear whether all of the vehicles involved were parked or occupied at the time of the collision. Investigations into the circumstances of the incident are continuing.
Recovery teams later removed the vehicles from the care home's garden, while officers continued examining the scene and speaking to those involved. Authorities have appealed for anyone who witnessed the collision or has relevant information to contact Cumbria Police.
