Mounted Police Volunteers Help Keep Westmorland and Furness Safe

10 Apr 2026 Mounted Police Volunteers Help Keep Westmorland and Furness Safe

A team of mounted police volunteers is helping to strengthen rural safety across Westmorland and Furness by supporting local policing efforts on horseback.

The volunteer riders work alongside police teams to provide a visible presence in rural communities, helping to spot and report suspicious activity, anti-social behaviour, and other concerns that may otherwise go unnoticed in remote areas.

Acting as the “eyes and ears” of the countryside, the volunteers assist officers by sharing information gathered during their patrols and helping to improve communication between police and residents living in isolated locations.

The initiative is part of a wider approach to tackling rural crime and improving community safety across the region, where officers often cover large geographical areas and rely on support from local volunteers and partner organisations.

Mounted volunteers also help increase reassurance among residents by providing a friendly and highly visible presence while riding through rural routes, bridleways, and open countryside.

Police say the scheme strengthens the link between communities and law enforcement, while also encouraging public involvement in keeping local areas safe.

The programme highlights the continued importance of community volunteering in supporting policing services and addressing rural crime challenges in Cumbria’s countryside.
