Motorway Drug Haul Bust: Man Jailed After £80,000 Cocaine Find During M6 Stop

Motorway Drug Haul Bust: Man Jailed After £80,000 Cocaine Find During M6 Stop

Police have jailed a man following a motorway stop on the M6 where a large quantity of cocaine was discovered in his car.
Paul Herbertson, 57, of Jarrow, was pulled over by officers between junctions 44 and 45 on 8 October last year initially after his behaviour raised suspicion. During the traffic stop, police found him evasive when questioned about his journey, at one point giving conflicting accounts of where he had been earlier in the day.
Officers subsequently searched Herbertson’s vehicle and uncovered a knotted plastic bag in the boot containing a compressed block of white powder later confirmed to be cocaine. A smaller amount was also found in a snap-bag in his wallet, alongside digital scales and wrapping materials all consistent with drug distribution activity.
Altogether, the total cocaine recovered weighed just over 1 kilogram, with a street value estimated as high as £80,000, though its wholesale value was around £20,000.
When interviewed by police, Herbertson claimed he had been asked to pick up a “package” without knowing its contents, but then refused to answer further questions. He later admitted possession of cocaine with intent to supply.
Today at Carlisle Crown Court, Herbertson was sentenced to three years in prison for his role in the offence.
Drug offences such as this reflect ongoing efforts by law enforcement to intercept illegal Class A drugs and disrupt supply chains on major transport routes like the M6. Authorities continue to urge anyone with information about drug trafficking or suspicious activity to come forward to help keep communities safe.
