Massive Search Operation Launched for Missing Person in Lake District

22 May 2026 Massive Search Operation Launched for Missing Person in Lake District

A major search operation involving mountain rescue teams, police officers, drones and search dogs was launched in the Lake District after a person was reported missing near Ullswater.

Patterdale Mountain Rescue Team said it was called to Aira Force on May 17 at around 10.45am following concerns for the individual’s welfare. Initial searches carried out by emergency crews failed to locate the missing person, prompting a wider operation across the surrounding countryside.

The large-scale effort involved police search and rescue teams, a Coastguard helicopter, North Cumbria Search and Rescue, specialist search dogs and mountain rescue volunteers operating both on land and on water.

Search areas included sections of the Ullswater Way through Gowbarrow, Pooley Bridge and High Street, with support requested from several additional rescue teams because of the vast area involved.

Around 70 mountain rescue personnel from teams across Cumbria joined the operation, including volunteers from Penrith, Kendal, Wasdale, Kirkby Stephen, and Duddon and Furness rescue groups.

After an 11-hour search, the missing person was safely located shortly before nightfall.

A spokesperson for Patterdale Mountain Rescue Team thanked all agencies involved in helping secure a successful outcome for the individual and their family.
