Marks & Spencer set to meet Team Barrow after public calls for return
Barrow-in-Furness, Cumbria, Leaders from Barrow’s regeneration partnership are set to meet senior executives from Marks & Spencer to discuss plans for boosting the town centre and seizing opportunities presented by major transformation initiatives.
The meeting comes as Team Barrow, a collaborative partnership between central government, Westmorland and Furness Council and BAE Systems, continues its drive to revitalise Barrow’s economy and built environment after securing substantial investment for the area.
Team Barrow has been engaging with local businesses and residents as part of an ambitious programme to breathe new life into the town centre, with the first stages of improvement work already underway. Efforts have included deep-cleaning key streets, installing new CCTV infrastructure, and launching extensive community conversations about the future of Barrow’s High Street and surrounding areas.
Westmorland and Furness Council and its partners are keen to involve major local stakeholders in discussions about potential redevelopment opportunities, particularly on large sites that could shape Barrow’s high street offer and commercial landscape for years to come.
Marks & Spencer, whose presence and role in town centre retail are seen as significant to Barrow’s commercial vitality, have agreed to sit down with regeneration representatives to explore how the retailer might engage with the evolving plans.
Team Barrow’s long-term vision is supported by a once-in-a-generation investment fund and aims to foster economic growth, new housing, modern retail and leisure spaces, and improved public realms that reflect the needs and ambitions of residents and businesses alike.
Local officials say the meeting with Marks & Spencer is part of ongoing efforts to collaborate with national and regional partners to ensure Barrow’s regeneration delivers broad benefits across the community. They add that public input and cooperation with major brands will be key to shaping future planning decisions.
Further details of the meeting’s outcome are expected to be released once discussions conclude.
