Man Dies After Falling Down Lake District Waterfall

A man in his 70s has died after slipping and falling a considerable distance down a waterfall in the Lake District, despite efforts by members of the public and emergency services to help him.

The incident happened at Moss Force, near Newlands Hause, on Sunday, August 2, at around 2.41pm. Keswick Mountain Rescue Team was called to the scene following reports that the man had suffered a significant fall at the popular waterfall.

Visitors at the waterfall, including off duty medical professionals, provided initial assistance while emergency crews made their way to the location. Despite the efforts of those at the scene and the emergency responders, the man sadly died from the injuries he sustained in the fall.

The rescue operation involved Keswick Mountain Rescue Team, Cockermouth Mountain Rescue Team, the Great North Air Ambulance Service, North West Ambulance Service, Cumbria Police and Cumbria Fire and Rescue Service.

The incident brought together several emergency organisations because of the challenging terrain around the waterfall. Mountain rescue teams are regularly called to incidents across the Lake District, where steep ground, wet surfaces and changing weather conditions can create significant risks for visitors.

Keswick Mountain Rescue Team expressed its condolences to the man's family and friends following the tragedy. The death has also highlighted the potential dangers of walking close to waterfalls and other areas of steep or uneven terrain.

Emergency services continue to advise visitors to take particular care when exploring the Lake District's mountainous areas and waterfalls. Wet rocks can become extremely slippery, while difficult terrain can make it challenging for rescuers to reach people who suffer accidents.
