Man Charged After Police Pursuit And Series Of Rural Break Ins

A 45 year old man has been charged following a police pursuit and a series of rural break ins across Cumbria, with police continuing to investigate reports of offences in the Tebay and Sedbergh areas.

Police received several reports of groups breaking into properties, outbuildings and vehicles from Friday evening into the early hours of Saturday. Officers later pursued a vehicle which crossed into North Yorkshire before stopping it in Hawes, where a man was arrested.

David Hogg, 45, of no fixed address but from the Bishop Auckland area, has been charged with attempted residential burglary, two counts of commercial burglary, two counts of theft from a vehicle, vehicle interference, driving while disqualified and failing to provide a specimen for analysis.

Hogg was remanded in custody and is due to appear at Barrow Magistrates' Court on Monday, August 10. The investigation is being carried out as part of Operation Themis, a focused police response to burglary offences across the area.

Officers said enquiries are continuing as they work to identify any outstanding suspects and locate potential victims who may not yet be aware that their property or vehicle was targeted. Residents in the affected areas are being encouraged to check garages, outbuildings and other property for signs of forced entry or theft.

Police are also asking residents and motorists to review CCTV, doorbell camera and dashcam footage recorded during the relevant period. Such footage could help investigators establish what happened and identify anyone else connected with the reported offences.
