Man 55 Admits Online Child Sex Offences After Vigilante Sting
A north Cumbrian man has admitted nine offences involving online sexual communication and indecent images after being caught in a vigilante sting. The offences involved people he believed were children aged 12 and 13.
Joseph McArdle, 55, of Moor Road, Longtown, appeared at Carlisle Crown Court and changed his pleas after previously denying a number of allegations. His case had been listed for trial following those earlier denials.
McArdle admitted three counts of attempting to engage in sexual communication with three different people whom he believed to be girls aged 12 and 13. The offences formed part of a wider set of allegations relating to online activity dating back to 2020.
He also pleaded guilty to attempting to incite a 12 year old child to engage in sexual activity. The court was also told that he admitted offences involving the distribution and making of indecent images.
Two of the images McArdle admitted distributing were classified as Category A, the most serious classification used for indecent images of children. He also admitted distributing a Category B image and making another Category B image.
The remaining two offences concerned the publication of obscene articles. These offences involved online conversations in which child rape was discussed with other users.
The court heard that the two offences relating to the publication of obscene articles covered a period from August 7 until November 10. The case therefore included both direct attempts at sexual communication and wider online activity involving discussions of child sexual abuse.
Following his nine guilty pleas, Judge Nicholas Barker told McArdle that he would immediately be required to comply with sex offender register notification requirements. This means he must provide police with current personal information in accordance with those requirements.
The notification requirements came into effect immediately following the guilty pleas. They form part of the legal measures applied to offenders who meet the relevant criteria for inclusion on the sex offenders register.
Judge Barker adjourned the case to allow a probation service pre sentence report to be prepared. The report will provide the court with further information before the final sentence is determined.
McArdle is due to return to Carlisle Crown Court on October 9 to receive his sentence. Until then, he remains on bail while the court process continues.
The case follows an investigation that resulted in McArdle being identified after the online interactions were arranged as part of a vigilante sting. The offences admitted in court date back to 2020, with the latest proceedings now moving towards sentencing.
The court will determine the appropriate punishment when McArdle returns for sentencing. His guilty pleas mean the case will now proceed to that stage following preparation of the probation service report.
Further details about the sentence are expected to be heard when the defendant returns to Carlisle Crown Court. Until that hearing, McArdle remains on bail and subject to the notification requirements imposed by the judge.
