Major Workington Road Closures Planned For Resurfacing And Improvements
A series of road closures are set to affect Workington over the coming weeks as resurfacing, infrastructure and active travel projects are carried out across the town. Several closures are planned for the A66, Washington Street, A596 and Central Way.
Washington Street will be subject to several separate closures as different stages of work are completed. An additional carriageway resurfacing closure is scheduled from 7pm on August 21 until 6am on August 22, followed by another two night closure from August 26 for road markings and traffic counter loop installation.
National Highways is also carrying out resurfacing work around the A66 Stainburn roundabout and Stainburn Road towards Park End Road. The route is scheduled to close from 6.30pm on August 21 until 6am on August 24, before another closure is planned for the same section from September 4 to September 7.
Further A66 closures are planned during September, including closures between Ramsay Brow and Park End Road on September 11 to 14 and September 18 to 21. The section between Ramsay Brow and Stainburn roundabout will then close from September 25 until September 28 as work continues on the area's road network.
Northern Gas Networks is currently replacing metal gas pipes with plastic pipework along Harrington Road. A closure and diversion are already in place, with the project expected to be completed by the end of August.
Washington Street will face another two night closure from September 14 until September 16 for traffic signal loop installation. Drivers using the area are therefore likely to encounter several separate periods of disruption as the various works progress.
The A596 will also be affected by planned resurfacing. Hall Park View, between Cumbria Police headquarters and Calva Brow roundabout, is due to close from September 12 to September 13, while Hall Brow between the M&S junction and police headquarters will close from September 19 to September 20.
An Active Travel project on Stainburn Road is scheduled to begin on September 1 and is expected to continue until Christmas. Temporary traffic signals will operate during weekday working from Monday to Friday while the improvements are carried out.
Further Active Travel improvements are planned for Central Way from September 7. Temporary two way and three way traffic lights will be introduced during the work, while a five day closure will later be required for resurfacing from October 19.
The combination of projects means drivers could face disruption at different locations across Workington throughout late August, September and October. Motorists are being advised to check their routes before travelling and allow additional time where necessary.
The planned work is intended to improve road surfaces, upgrade infrastructure and support longer term improvements to the town's transport network. The closures are being scheduled in stages to allow the individual projects to be completed safely.
There will also be work affecting pedestrians in High Harrington, where repairs to the Bridge Street footbridge are expected to take between eight and 10 weeks. Temporary traffic lights will be used while the repairs are carried out.
With several projects taking place at different times, road users are encouraged to pay close attention to temporary signs and diversion routes. The schedule may also be subject to changes depending on progress, weather and other site conditions.
The programme represents a substantial period of road and infrastructure work for Workington, but the completed schemes are expected to deliver improved road surfaces, upgraded infrastructure and better facilities for pedestrians and other road users.
