Major Traffic Restrictions Planned Ahead of Appleby Horse Fair as Safety Concerns Raised

14 Apr 2026 Major Traffic Restrictions Planned Ahead of Appleby Horse Fair as Safety Concerns Raised

Plans for a series of traffic restrictions during the upcoming Appleby Horse Fair are currently under discussion, as local authorities look to improve safety and reduce disruption during the busy annual gathering.

The proposed measures form part of a wider Traffic Regulation Order, which aims to control vehicle movement, manage parking, and ensure safer conditions for both residents and visitors attending the event.

Among the key proposals are speed limit reductions, one way systems, and restrictions on vehicle access in certain areas of Appleby. Officials are also considering tighter controls on parking, including designated permit only zones and waiting restrictions on specific roads.

The Appleby Horse Fair, held annually in early June, attracts thousands of visitors, along with large numbers of caravans and horse drawn vehicles. This significant influx often leads to heavy congestion and safety concerns, particularly on narrow roads and in pedestrian heavy areas.

Authorities say the updated measures are designed to balance the needs of the local community with the smooth running of the event. Previous traffic plans have already introduced features such as 30mph speed limits, one way traffic systems, and parking bans to reduce risks and improve road safety.
