Major Progress Made on Sands Centre Roof Replacement

Major Progress Made on Sands Centre Roof Replacement

Work to replace the auditorium roof at The Sands Centre in Carlisle has reached a significant milestone, with the first layer of the new roof structure now in place.
More than 200 tonnes of old roof panels were removed before Christmas after construction resumed late last year. The project had previously been paused in January 2025 after Storm Eowyn damaged the temporary roof covering.
The Sands Centre auditorium has been closed since September 2023 following the discovery of potentially unsafe reinforced autoclaved aerated concrete (RAAC) in the roof. Updated government guidance required the material to be removed and replaced.
Construction firm Cubby Construction began the roof replacement work in 2024. Although the auditorium was originally expected to reopen in autumn 2025, progress was delayed following the company’s acquisition by Cubby Group in July. Work has since resumed under a revised programme agreed with Cumberland Council.
A specially designed canopy, supported by more than 16 miles of scaffolding, has been installed to allow work to continue safely. Extra measures have been put in place to ensure the temporary structure can withstand severe weather.
Cumberland Council says the project remains on course for completion, with the auditorium expected to reopen in mid-June. A full summer events programme is planned once the venue returns to use. Council leader Mark Fryer said he was encouraged by the progress being made.
In addition to the roof replacement, improvements are being carried out inside the auditorium, including new seating and upgrades to backstage areas. Ventilation, lighting and fire alarm systems are also being modernised, along with improved access for future roof maintenance.
The closure affects only the events auditorium. Other facilities at The Sands Centre including the gym, swimming pool, studios, sports hall and Riverside Café remain open as normal.
