Major M6 Closure as Urgent Road Repairs Take Place Between Junctions 39 and 40
A significant stretch of the M6 motorway will be closed this month as essential road repair work is carried out between Junction 39 at Shap and Junction 40 near Penrith. The closures, part of ongoing maintenance alongside the large scale Clifton bridge replacement project, are expected to cause disruption for motorists and freight traffic.
National Highways has confirmed that the M6 southbound carriageway will be closed overnight on Tuesday 27 January from 10 pm until 6 am the following morning to allow urgent surface repairs to be completed safely. During the closure period, all traffic will be diverted via the parallel A6 route, with clearly signed diversion routes in place to guide drivers.
Authorities have urged drivers to plan their journeys in advance and factor in extra time, particularly during peak periods. Speed warning signs will be deployed along diversion routes to help ensure safe travel, and motorists are reminded to obey all traffic management instructions.
The overnight repair work comes as part of a broader programme connected to the Clifton bridge replacement, a major engineering project to renew the railway bridge carrying the West Coast Main Line over the motorway. Earlier in January, the M6 was fully closed for two weekends to facilitate demolition of the old structure and installation of a new bridge, which was completed ahead of schedule.
National Highways has apologised for any inconvenience caused and said the repairs are essential to maintain safety and reliability on this key section of the motorway. Road users are encouraged to check live travel updates on the Traffic England website or through official National Highways channels before setting out.
