Lost Dog Found Alive On Helvellyn After Almost Three Weeks
A dog missing for almost three weeks has been found alive on Helvellyn after a volunteer searcher heard him barking from a difficult and dangerous location on the fell.
The volunteer searcher discovered Teddy while continuing efforts to locate the missing dog. Because of the challenging terrain and the position where Teddy had become trapped, Keswick Mountain Rescue Team was called to assist with the recovery.
The rescue callout began at around 10.20am, with specialist organisations Kenzie’s K9s Animal Search & Rescue and Drone SAR For Lost Dogs UK also involved in the operation. Seven members of the mountain rescue team took part in bringing Teddy safely out of the area.
Teddy was found without any obvious injuries, but he had lost a considerable amount of weight after surviving for almost three weeks on the fell. Rescuers gave him a small amount of food before carefully securing him in a rucksack and carrying him down to Swirls car park.
The difficult rescue took around three and a half hours from the initial callout to the point where the team reached Swirls. The challenging location meant that specialist mountain rescue skills were required to safely reach Teddy and bring him back down the fell.
Once the team arrived at Swirls car park, Teddy was reunited with his owner and the person who had originally provided information about his location. He was then taken onward to a veterinary practice for further assessment following his prolonged time missing.
The discovery brought an end to an extensive search that had continued since Teddy disappeared on August 2. His survival after spending so many days in the mountainous environment was particularly significant given the difficult terrain and conditions across Helvellyn.
The involvement of several specialist search organisations helped support the effort to locate and recover the dog. Mountain rescue volunteers were able to combine their experience of the terrain with information provided by those searching specifically for Teddy.
Teddy's condition was a concern when he was found because of the considerable weight he had lost during his time away from home. However, rescuers reported that there were no obvious injuries when they reached him, providing a positive outcome after the lengthy search.
The rescue team described the outcome as remarkable and praised everyone who had continued searching for Teddy. Their efforts ultimately resulted in the dog being located alive and safely returned to his owner.
The successful rescue also highlights the difficulties involved in searching for missing animals in mountainous areas such as the Lake District. Dogs can become trapped in remote locations that are difficult for searchers to access safely without specialist equipment and knowledge.
For Teddy and his owner, the discovery on Friday brought an emotional conclusion to an almost three week search. Following his veterinary assessment, attention will now turn to his recovery after his prolonged time on Helvellyn.
