Lightning Strike Causes Train Delays on Barrow‑to‑Lancaster Line

25 Mar 2026 Lightning Strike Causes Train Delays on Barrow‑to‑Lancaster Line

A lightning strike earlier today has caused significant disruption to rail services on the line between Barrow‑in‑Furness and Lancaster.

The electrical storm hit equipment along the route, damaging the signalling system and forcing multiple trains to cancel or run late. Passengers have been warned that delays of up to 25 minutes may occur while technicians work to restore normal operations.

Network Rail crews are currently on site addressing the fault. Services are expected to remain affected until around noon, with commuters urged to check the latest updates before travelling.

The disruption is impacting services not only between Barrow and Lancaster, but also on connecting routes including Corkickle to Preston and Millom to Manchester Airport.
