Legal Firm Issues Guidance After PM Law Group Intervention by Solicitors Regulation Authority
A law firm brought in as part of the Solicitors Regulation Authority (SRA) intervention into the collapsed PM Law Group has issued guidance for clients and others affected by the unexpected closure of the legal network.
The guidance comes in the wake of the SRA’s decision earlier this week to intervene after PM Law Group and its associated firms abruptly ceased trading, leaving staff without work and many clients unsure about ongoing legal matters including property transactions and personal injury claims.
Under an SRA intervention, client files and money are taken into the regulator’s control and an external firm is appointed to manage the transition while protecting client interests. The guidance issued by the assisting firm explains how clients can expect to be contacted about their files and what steps they may need to take to secure new legal representation.
The SRA has made clear that ongoing matters must be reassigned and that clients whose transactions were underway, such as home purchases, should prepare for potential delays while new solicitors are appointed. Priority will be given to cases with the most urgent time pressures.
According to the regulator, any money held by the firm at the time of intervention will be placed in a statutory trust until ownership can be established and returned where appropriate. Clients whose funds cannot immediately be recovered may have the ability to apply to the SRA’s Compensation Fund.
Legal experts and industry bodies have noted that while interventions are rare, the process is designed to provide a structured response to closures that could otherwise leave consumers vulnerable. Affected clients are advised to follow official guidance and avoid unverified third-party advice as they seek to move their legal matters forward.
Further updates are expected as the intervention progresses and the SRA and its appointed firm contact clients and manage the transition of cases previously handled by PM Law Group.
