Last Minute Christmas Magic in the Lake District: Festive Events to Enjoy Before December 25

The Lake District comes alive each December, transforming into a festive winter destination packed with seasonal experiences for families, couples and visitors of all ages. With Christmas Day fast approaching, there are still plenty of magical events and attractions to enjoy across the region in the days leading up to December 25. From scenic winter walks to Santa-themed adventures, here are some of the best Christmas activities still taking place in the Lake District.
Festive Afternoon Teas Around Lake Windermere Hotels and tearooms surrounding Lake Windermere are offering special Christmas afternoon teas throughout December. Visitors can enjoy festive cakes, finger sandwiches and warming seasonal drinks, often served alongside stunning lake views that add to the holiday atmosphere.
Winter Walks in Grizedale Forest Grizedale Forest provides a peaceful festive escape with its winter walking trails. Families can explore scenic woodland paths, discover forest sculptures and take in panoramic views of the surrounding fells. Nearby cafés and country pubs offer the perfect place to warm up afterwards.
Santa’s Secret Underground Grotto One of the Lake District’s most unique Christmas attractions, Santa’s Secret Underground Grotto at Honister, runs until Christmas Eve. Families are transported by bus into the fells before descending underground to meet Santa in a magical, light-filled grotto complete with tunnels, storytelling and elf-led activities.
Skate by the Lake at Ullswater Another Place, located on the shores of Ullswater, has introduced a festive outdoor ice rink for the season. The 200-square-metre rink is set beside a 16-foot Christmas tree and surrounded by breathtaking fell views. Open daily until January 10, it welcomes both hotel guests and day visitors.
Christmas Theatre and Pantomimes Festive theatre continues across the region, with Theatre by the Lake in Keswick staging The Wizard of Oz until January 4. The family-friendly production Little Gift runs until December 27, while pantomimes and Christmas shows are being performed at venues throughout Cumbria.
Ravenglass and Eskdale Railway Santa Express The popular Santa Express service runs until Christmas Eve on the Ravenglass and Eskdale Railway. The experience includes elf-led storytelling followed by a 40-minute steam train journey through the Eskdale Valley, where children can meet Santa onboard.
With only a few days left until Christmas, the Lake District offers a wide range of festive events that capture the magic of the season and provide memorable experiences for visitors making the most of the countdown to Christmas Day.
