Lake District Visitors Fined For Fly Camping, Fires And Littering As Summer Holidays Begin
Police have stepped up patrols across the Lake District after issuing multiple fines to visitors caught fly camping, lighting open fires, and leaving litter around Windermere as the busy summer holiday season gets underway.
Officers from South Lakes Neighbourhood Police have been carrying out increased patrols around Windermere during the opening week of the school holidays. During the operation, officers engaged with several groups found camping illegally, lighting fires, and leaving significant amounts of rubbish around the lakeshore.
A number of fixed penalty notices were issued to two separate groups for breaching the area's Public Space Protection Order (PSPO). The order is designed to protect the Lake District's natural environment by restricting activities that cause damage, nuisance, or risk to public safety.
Police have reminded visitors that anyone enjoying the National Park should park only in designated areas, camp only where permitted, take all litter home, and avoid using disposable barbecues or lighting open fires near the lake. Officers warned that breaches of the PSPO can result in enforcement action, including on the spot fines.
The increased patrols form part of wider efforts to manage visitor numbers during one of the busiest periods of the year. Authorities say irresponsible behaviour such as fly camping and abandoned fires not only damages the environment but also creates hazards for wildlife, local communities, and emergency services.
Open fires remain a particular concern during warm, dry weather, with fire services across northern England warning that even small unattended flames can quickly develop into serious wildfires. Visitors are therefore urged to avoid lighting fires altogether and instead use designated facilities where available.
Police said the vast majority of people visiting the Lake District behave responsibly and respect the area's protected landscapes. However, they stressed that enforcement action will continue throughout the summer against anyone whose actions threaten the National Park or negatively affect local residents and fellow visitors.
