Lake District Students Claim Historic Adventure Race Victory

20 May 2026 Lake District Students Claim Historic Adventure Race Victory

Pupils from the Lake District celebrated a landmark sporting achievement after winning a major inter-school adventure competition for the first time in the event’s 20-year history.

The annual Round Square Adventure Race brought together teams from several schools, including Windermere, Gordonstoun, Abbots Holme and Surrey Hills. Over the course of two intense days, Year 9 and Year 10 students faced a series of physically and mentally demanding outdoor challenges designed to push competitors to their limits.

Participants competed in activities such as rock climbing, mountain bike orienteering, open-water swimming, night navigation exercises and a challenging mountain fell race. The competition is widely regarded as one of the toughest school adventure events in the region, requiring not only athletic ability but also teamwork, strategy and determination.

This year, the host school, Windermere School, produced a standout performance to finally secure the championship title after years of participation. The team dominated several disciplines, finishing first in climbing, mountain biking, open-water swimming and night orienteering.

School officials praised the students for their resilience and commitment throughout the competition. Organisers said the event tested both the physical strength and mental toughness of the participants, making the victory even more significant.

Paul Platt, head of outdoor education and organiser of the event, described the achievement as a proud moment for the school community. He highlighted the students’ determination, teamwork and ability to perform under pressure across multiple demanding challenges.

The victory marks a historic milestone for Windermere School, which has taken part in every edition of the race since it was first launched two decades ago. Teachers and supporters said the success reflected months of preparation, dedication and strong team spirit among the pupils.

The achievement has also been celebrated as an example of the growing importance of outdoor education in developing leadership skills, confidence and resilience among young people.

The event concluded with students, staff and supporters celebrating what many described as a memorable and inspiring triumph for the Lake District school.
