Lake District Drivers Face Delays as Major Cycling Event Takes Over Roads

10 May 2026 Lake District Drivers Face Delays as Major Cycling Event Takes Over Roads

Drivers travelling through England’s Lake District have been warned to expect significant delays today (Sunday, May 10) due to the staging of the Fred Whitton Challenge, a major annual cycling event.

Authorities confirmed that several roads will be closed until approximately 6:30pm, particularly along routes between Blea Tarn and Hard Knott Pass, as well as the stretch from Ambleside to Kirk stone Pass. These restrictions are expected to disrupt normal traffic flow throughout the day.

The event, now in its 24th year, begins at Grasmere showground and attracts around 2,500 მონაწილators annually. Cyclists will tackle a demanding 112-mile course featuring some of the region’s most challenging climbs, including Kirk stone, Honister, Newlands, Whitleather, Hard Knott, Wry nose, and Blea Tarn passes.

Due to the high volume of participants and road closures, drivers are strongly encouraged to plan alternative routes or allow extra time for their journeys.
