Lake District Chef Crowned Best Young Chef in the Northwest
A rising culinary star from the Lake District has been named Young Northwest Chef of the Year 2026 after standing out in a prestigious regional cooking competition.
Hope Ryall-Thurlow, a demi-chef de partie at Henrock by Simon Rogan in Bowness, secured the title after competing against some of the North West’s most promising young chefs in a demanding live cook-off competition.
The event brought together finalists aged 25 and under from leading restaurants across the region, with contestants challenged to prepare a three-course meal for two people within two hours and on a limited budget of £30. Competitors were also required to showcase seasonal ingredients and locally sourced produce from the North West.
Hope impressed judges with a refined and technically accomplished menu. The winning dishes included asparagus with poached egg and Hollandaise sauce as a starter, followed by Cartmel Valley venison served with woodruff-cured lardo, radicchio and celeriac. Dessert featured set chamomile cream with preserved apples, meadow biscuit and cobnuts.
Judges praised the young chef’s creativity, composure under pressure and attention to detail throughout the competition. The panel included several highly respected figures from the hospitality industry, with experienced chefs and food experts assessing contestants on taste, presentation, technical skill and originality.
Hope competed against finalists from respected restaurants across the Northwest, including establishments in Cumbria, Manchester, Cheshire and Lancashire.
The victory is seen as another major achievement for the Lake District’s growing reputation as one of Britain’s leading culinary destinations. The region has become nationally recognised for its Michelin-starred restaurants, focus on local produce and development of young culinary talent.
Henrock by Simon Rogan, where Hope currently works, is part of the internationally recognised restaurant group led by acclaimed chef Simon Rogan, whose influence has helped place Cumbria firmly on the UK food map.
The award has been warmly welcomed by the local hospitality industry, with many describing Hope Ryall-Thurlow as one of the region’s brightest emerging culinary talents.
Industry figures believe the achievement could mark the beginning of a highly successful career for the young chef as the Lake District continues to produce nationally recognised names in British gastronomy.
