Knife Wielding Robber Jailed After Violent Barrow Attack
A man who carried out a violent robbery while armed with knives has been jailed following an attack at a home in Barrow.
Thomas Dempsey, 36, of Lord Street, Barrow, was sentenced at Preston Crown Court after admitting robbery and three counts of possessing a knife in a public place.
The court heard that the incident took place on September 23 when Dempsey arrived at a property on Anson Street in Barrow. After the victim answered the door, Dempsey forced a large knife through the doorway, injuring the man.
Once inside the house, Dempsey threatened the victim while holding two knives and demanded money. Prosecutors said he held one of the weapons against the victim’s stomach before cash was handed over.
During the incident, the victim suffered injuries including cuts to the cheek and finger, along with a stab wound to the thigh.
After receiving the money, Dempsey dropped one of the knives and fled the scene.
The court sentenced him to a total of nine years in custody, made up of a six-year prison term followed by a three-year extended licence period.
Detective Constable Emma Mullan described the attack as “reckless and dangerous,” warning that the injuries could have been far more serious.
Police also said the sentencing coincided with Sceptre, a national campaign focused on tackling knife crime and encouraging people to safely surrender bladed weapons.
