Kirkoswald Face Windscale Trip In Fred Conway County Cup First Round
Kirkoswald will travel to West Cumbria to face Windscale in one of the standout ties from the Fred Conway County Cup first round.
Kirkoswald reached last season’s Fred Conway County Cup final before losing 3-0, and their reward this time is an away trip to Windscale. The Westmorland League First Division leaders will face a side from the Wearside League, with the fixture providing an early test for a Kirkoswald team that has started the new campaign in strong form.
Windscale will enter the contest with confidence after remaining unbeaten in their league campaign so far. Their latest result was a 2-2 home draw against South Moor, a result that maintained their unbeaten record and ensured they remain a difficult opponent for Kirkoswald when the two sides meet in the county cup.
Kirkoswald have also made an impressive start to their season, currently leading the Westmorland League First Division. They have played seven matches without defeat, recording six victories and one draw, giving them a strong position at the top of the table and continuing the momentum built during their run to last season’s county cup final.
The first round draw has produced several other fixtures involving teams from different leagues, but the Kirkoswald and Windscale meeting stands out because of the contrasting routes taken by the two clubs. Kirkoswald are challenging near the top of their division, while Windscale have also demonstrated consistency by avoiding defeat throughout their league campaign to date.
Kirkoswald’s appearance in last season’s final means they will be familiar with the later stages of the competition. Their previous campaign ended with a 3-0 defeat in the final, but reaching that stage marked an impressive cup run and gives the club another opportunity to challenge for the trophy after progressing into this season’s competition.
Another major first round fixture sees Wetheriggs United host Unisun Athletic. Wetheriggs currently sit second in the Westmorland League, just two points behind Kirkoswald, although they have played one match more. Their opponents, Unisun Athletic, are the reigning Cumberland County League champions and have won all five of their league matches so far.
Calthwaite have also been handed a home tie against Fellside United in an all-Westmorland League meeting. Calthwaite currently sit third in the table, while Fellside United have collected only two draws from six matches and are positioned next to the bottom of the division, creating another fixture between sides currently experiencing contrasting league campaigns.
Carlisle Athletic and Greystoke will meet in another interesting first round contest between clubs from different competitions. Carlisle Athletic are newcomers to Division One of the Cumberland County League, while Greystoke currently sit at the bottom of the Westmorland League, with both teams looking to make progress in the cup after needing points in their respective league campaigns.
Maryport Athletic have been drawn away to Langwathby, providing another inter-league contest in the opening round. Maryport Athletic lost their Cumberland County League title last season and will now travel to face a Langwathby side that currently occupies a mid-table position in Division Four of the Westmorland League.
Two West Lancashire League sides have also been handed home fixtures in which they will look to progress into the next round. Cleator Moor Celtic will entertain Keswick, with Keswick having been relegated alongside their opponents’ reserve team to Division One of the County League last season, while Whitehaven will host Bransty Rangers in another West Cumbrian derby.
Whitehaven’s meeting with Bransty Rangers will bring together two sides with different positions within the Cumberland County League structure. Bransty Rangers are currently among the leading group of teams in Division One, while the fixture gives Whitehaven home advantage and an opportunity to continue their own cup campaign against a side that has made a positive start to its league season.
The remaining all-Cumberland County League fixtures include Cockermouth against Mirehouse, Northbank against Aspatria and Wigton Harriers against Whitehaven Miners. These matches ensure that several clubs from within the same competition will meet during the first round, with each side knowing that victory will secure progress into the next stage of the county cup.
Two further first round matches will see Dearham United take on Braithwaite and Eden Valley face Silloth. The pair of fixtures complete the list of first round ties alongside the various inter-league and all-league contests, giving clubs across Cumbria and surrounding competitions an opportunity to continue their cup campaigns.
Carlisle City, the holders of the Fred Conway County Cup, have been given a first round bye, meaning they will not have to play at this stage of the competition. Carlisle United, Penrith and Workington have also received byes, allowing those clubs to enter the competition at a later stage while the other teams contest the opening round.
All of the first round ties must be played on or before October 10. That deadline gives the participating clubs a fixed period in which to arrange their fixtures, while Kirkoswald and the other sides will now prepare for their respective cup contests with the aim of securing a place in the next round.
For Kirkoswald, the trip to Windscale represents an early opportunity to continue the club’s positive start and build on last season’s run to the final. With both teams unbeaten in their respective league campaigns so far, the first round meeting brings together two sides entering the competition with strong records and ambitions of progressing further.
