Kirklees Man Jailed For Almost Four Years After Burglary Spree Across Eden
A man who carried out a series of burglaries across the Eden area has been sentenced to almost four years in prison after targeting properties across parts of Cumbria.
John Moorehouse, 31, of Chinewood Avenue, Kirklees, was sentenced to three years and 11 months at Carlisle Crown Court on Tuesday, September 1. His sentence follows a series of offences committed over a period spanning June 2024 to January 2026.
Moorehouse committed a number of burglaries in June 2024 before carrying out a further burglary in January 2026. The offences affected properties across the Westmorland and Furness area, with locations ranging from Thrimby to Coniston and surrounding areas.
During the burglary spree, Moorehouse stole a range of property from those he targeted. Items taken included jewellery, cash and electrical goods, leaving victims dealing with the consequences of having their homes entered and possessions stolen.
The offences were spread across a wide geographical area, covering communities between Thrimby and Coniston as well as other surrounding locations. The investigation ultimately brought together the offences and led to Moorehouse appearing before Carlisle Crown Court.
Moorehouse was also convicted of escaping lawful custody. The additional conviction formed part of the matters dealt with by the court when he was sentenced on September 1.
The court imposed a custodial sentence of three years and 11 months. The sentence means Moorehouse will spend almost four years in prison for the offences connected with the burglary spree and his conviction for escaping lawful custody.
Detective Sergeant Ryan Smith said burglary was an invasive crime that could leave victims feeling distressed and unsafe in their own homes. His comments highlighted the wider impact such offences can have beyond the loss of property.
He said Moorehouse's actions had caused considerable upset to the people he targeted and expressed hope that the sentence would provide reassurance to victims and local communities affected by the offences.
The police response to the offences forms part of Operation Themis, Cumbria Constabulary's ongoing response to and focus on burglary offences across the county.
Operation Themis is being used as part of wider efforts to identify those responsible for burglary offences and bring them before the courts. The investigation into Moorehouse's offending has resulted in a substantial custodial sentence following the court proceedings.
Detective Sergeant Smith said officers remained committed to identifying and prosecuting people responsible for burglary offences. The message comes as the force continues its focus on burglary through Operation Themis.
