King Charles To Publish Personal Tax Bill In Historic First For British Monarch
King Charles III will become the first British monarch to publicly reveal his personal tax bill under new transparency measures.
Buckingham Palace confirmed that the King's personal tax information will be published as part of the Royal Household's annual financial report. The move marks the first time a reigning British monarch has voluntarily disclosed the amount of tax paid on private income.
The disclosure will cover the 2024–25 financial year and include income generated from private investments and estates such as Balmoral and Sandringham, along with earnings from the Duchy of Lancaster. As in previous years, the Sovereign Grant, which funds official royal duties, is not subject to personal taxation.
Buckingham Palace said the decision reflects the King's long standing commitment to financial accountability. Charles voluntarily paid income and capital gains tax while serving as Prince of Wales and chose to continue the practice after ascending the throne in 2022.
The announcement comes amid growing calls for greater transparency over royal finances following increased public scrutiny of the monarchy's funding and expenditure. Palace officials said publishing the King's tax bill is intended to improve public understanding of how royal finances operate.
The King's decision goes beyond previous royal reporting practices, which focused primarily on public spending through the Sovereign Grant. It also contrasts with the position of some other senior royals, whose personal tax payments have not traditionally been disclosed in the same way.
The tax disclosure will accompany the Royal Household's annual financial report, which outlines public expenditure, official engagements, staffing, travel costs, and progress on the ongoing renovation of Buckingham Palace. The report forms part of wider efforts to modernise the monarchy and strengthen public accountability.
The publication is expected to set a historic precedent for future monarchs and represents one of the most significant reforms to royal financial transparency in modern British history.
