Kendal woman created fake accounts to harass ex after breakup

27 Apr 2026 Kendal woman created fake accounts to harass ex after breakup

A Kendal woman has been found to have created fake social media accounts in order to harass her ex-partner after a breakup according to court proceedings.

The case involved the woman setting up multiple false online profiles, which she used to contact, monitor, or disturb her former partner. Such behaviour is commonly classified as cyber harassment or online stalking, both of which are treated seriously under UK law.

The court heard that the harassment began after the relationship ended, with the defendant allegedly unable to accept the breakup. She then created fake accounts on social media platforms to continue contacting or targeting her ex, causing distress and repeated unwanted communication.

Authorities investigated the case after the victim reported the activity, leading to digital evidence being collected from the accounts used. Police are increasingly using cyber forensic methods to trace fake profiles back to real individuals, even when anonymity is attempted.

Cases involving fake account harassment often fall under the Malicious Communications Act or Protection from Harassment Act, which can result in fines, restraining orders, or imprisonment depending on severity.

During proceedings, the court emphasized that online harassment after a breakup is still a criminal offence, even if no physical contact occurs, because repeated unwanted messages and impersonation can cause significant emotional distress.

The woman was ultimately dealt with by the court, reflecting growing concern over digital abuse linked to relationship breakdowns and the misuse of social media platforms for revenge or harassment.
