Kendal To Host Ten Days Of Free Heritage Events Celebrating Local History
Kendal is set to host a ten-day programme of free heritage events celebrating the town's history and traditions.
The programme forms part of Heritage Open Days and will bring together a range of activities designed to give residents and visitors opportunities to explore Kendal's historic buildings, collections and community heritage. Events are scheduled to begin on September 11, with activities taking place at several locations across the town.
Abbot Hall will be among the venues taking part, offering visitors tours focusing on highlights from the gallery. The opportunity will allow people to explore aspects of the building and its collections while learning more about an important part of Kendal's cultural heritage.
Kendal Parish Church will also open its doors as part of the programme. Visitors will be able to see clerical robes and take part in guided tours covering the church and its belltower, providing an opportunity to discover more about the historic site and its role within the town.
The Cumbria Archive Service is joining Nottingham Trent University to deliver talks at Stricklandgate House. The sessions will provide an opportunity for people to engage with historical material and learn more about the records and stories connected with Kendal and the surrounding area.
The programme will also explore the religious and social history of the town. At the Friends Meeting House, visitors can learn about everyday Quaker life, while the Unitary Chapel and its grounds will also be available to explore during the heritage celebrations.
Kendal Town Council is arranging a series of History of Kendal talks in the mayor's parlour. The sessions will include contributions from the Romney Society, adding further local knowledge and historical perspective to the programme of events taking place during the heritage period.
The events are intended to showcase different aspects of Kendal's past rather than focusing on a single period or location. Visitors will have opportunities to explore architecture, religious history, local records and community stories through activities taking place across several of the town's established heritage venues.
The programme will conclude with an autumn fete at Abbot Hall Park on September 20. The event is scheduled to run from noon until 4pm and will provide a more informal community setting alongside the historical activities being held throughout the wider programme.
The autumn fete will include a craft ale marquee, a gin and Prosecco bar, fresh doughnuts and other sweet treats. Visitors will also find stalls featuring beauty products and crafts, adding a range of food, drink and shopping opportunities to the final event.
Families and children will have several activities to choose from at the fete. Face painting, henna tattoos and kite making will form part of the entertainment, while exhibitions featuring Bollywood and Bhangra dancing will provide another cultural element during the afternoon.
A tuk tuk will also be available for photographs, providing one of the more unusual attractions at the community event. Local organisations and charities will have a presence as well, giving visitors an opportunity to find out about their work and access information about services and activities available within the community.
The fete will also provide information for anyone interested in becoming Kendal's next town crier. People attending will be able to find out more about how to apply for the role, adding a further connection between the event and the town's longstanding civic traditions.
