KENDAL SUPERMARKET TO DONATE FOOD TO HELP TACKLE HOLIDAY HUNGER
A supermarket in Kendal is set to donate food to a local food bank this summer to help support families and children at risk of holiday hunger during the school break.
The initiative will see Morrisons Kendal work alongside Kings Food Bank over the coming weeks, ensuring essential food supplies reach households facing increased financial pressure while schools are closed. The partnership forms part of a wider community effort to provide additional support to families during the summer holidays.
The project will be coordinated by the store's Community Champion, Rachel Latham, who will oversee the collection and distribution of much needed food items. The aim is to ensure local families have access to nutritious food during a period when many children no longer receive school meals.
The Kendal initiative is one of many taking place across the country as part of a national programme that will see the supermarket chain donate £50,000 worth of food to support school holiday activity schemes. The donations will benefit local schools, community groups and organisations delivering activities and meals through the Holiday Activities and Food Programme.
The supermarket has said supporting local communities remains a key priority and highlighted its existing work with food banks and community organisations through its surplus food redistribution programme. Good quality unsold food is regularly donated to help reduce waste while supporting people experiencing food insecurity.
Customers are also able to contribute through the store's Food Bank Pick Up Pack scheme, which allows shoppers to purchase pre packed bags containing essential grocery items. These packs are then distributed to local food banks and community organisations by in store community teams, helping to increase support for those most in need.
With many families facing higher household costs during the school holidays, community organisations say initiatives such as this play an important role in reducing food insecurity and ensuring children continue to have access to healthy meals. The latest partnership reflects the growing collaboration between businesses and charities to provide practical support where it is needed most.
