Kendal Farmers' Market Crowned National Champion at Prestigious Rural Awards
Kendal Farmers' Market has been crowned the UK's National Local Food and Drink Champion at the prestigious Countryside Alliance Awards. The market received the honour during a ceremony held at the House of Lords in London. The award recognises its outstanding support for local producers and the wider rural economy.
More than 50,000 public votes were cast in this year's awards, with Kendal emerging as the national winner in its category. The market supports farmers, food producers and artisans located within 30 miles of the town. Organisers said the award reflects the strength of the local community and the dedication of its traders.
Kendal Farmers' Market traces its history back to 1189, when King Richard I granted the town its Market Charter, making it one of the oldest farmers' markets in the United Kingdom. Since March 2024, it has operated twice each month on alternate Fridays and now features around 35 stalls. Organisers are exploring opportunities for further growth as visitor numbers and trader demand continue to increase.
Trader Harriet Pugh described the award as an incredible honour, saying it recognised the hard work of everyone involved in making the market a success. Market manager Marian Graveson said the national title was a fitting follow up to the North of England award won earlier this year. She added that the success celebrates the farmers, producers and artisans who bring high quality local food and drink to Kendal.
The market has become a key attraction in Kendal, helping independent businesses thrive while encouraging residents and visitors to support locally produced food. Its continued success has strengthened the town's reputation as one of Cumbria's leading food destinations. The latest accolade is expected to boost its profile even further.
Winning the national title places Kendal Farmers' Market among the country's leading rural businesses and highlights the important role local markets play in supporting British farming and independent producers. The achievement has been widely welcomed across Cumbria as a proud moment for the town and the wider region. Further celebrations are expected in the coming weeks.
