Kendal Community Rallies to Raise £200,000 for Woman's Life Saving Liver Transplant
A Kendal community has come together to help raise £200,000 for a woman in desperate need of a life saving liver transplant. Friends, family and local supporters are backing the campaign with a series of fundraising events. The appeal has attracted widespread support across Cumbria.
The campaign is supporting Florence "Flo" Moffat Charles, who has been diagnosed with Primary Sclerosing Cholangitis and later developed the rare bile duct cancer cholangiocarcinoma. Although a liver transplant offers her best chance of survival, she is not eligible for the procedure through the NHS because of strict clinical criteria. The couple have therefore turned to a specialist hospital in Turkey, where the treatment is expected to cost around £200,000.
Community groups, businesses and residents have rallied behind the appeal by organising fundraising events and making donations. Flo and her husband Josh have been overwhelmed by the generosity shown by people across Kendal and beyond. They hope the campaign will not only help fund the transplant but also raise awareness of the challenges faced by people living with rare liver diseases.
Josh is being assessed as a potential living liver donor, although doctors have identified additional complications that may increase the risks of surgery. The family is also exploring alternative donor options while continuing to raise funds for treatment overseas. Medical specialists say a successful transplant could offer Flo the opportunity for many more years with her loved ones.
The fundraising campaign has inspired an outpouring of support from across the local community. Donations continue to arrive as organisers work towards reaching the ambitious £200,000 target. Every contribution is expected to bring the family a step closer to securing the treatment.
Supporters say the campaign reflects the strength and compassion of the Kendal community during an incredibly difficult time. As fundraising efforts continue, Flo and her family remain hopeful that the life changing operation can soon become a reality. The appeal continues to gather momentum with events and donations planned in the coming weeks.
